Korean LPGA take The Queens Cup presented by Kowa in landslide victory.
For the Korean LPGA Tour revenge was sweet as they trounced the LPGA of Japan to win The Queens presented by Kowa in Nagoya this afternoon.
The stars of the KLPGA were at their dominant best winning 16 out of a possible 18 points today at Miyoshi Country Club. The KLPGA team captain Jiya Shin was delighted with her team’s victory after being defeating by the LPGA of Japan in a thrilling contest in 2015, and congratulated all of the tours and their captains, Risuko Ryu, Trish Johnson and Rachel Hetherington respectively. She said:
“I will take great memories from here. I’m very proud of my team because they played so solid today and I’m very impressed with them. This is the end of the season and a great event for all of us.”
JLPGA captain, Ritsuko Ryu, said: “Congratulations to the KLPGA: it was a great contest and an honour. We always think that the KLPGA players are fantastic. Our nine players, including myself, played to their absolute best and we don’t really have any regrets, but I think we can take this forward to next year’s event and this will give us the motivation to strive once again.”
The battle in the “Third Place final” between the ALPG and the Ladies European Tour was a nailbiting finish which came down to the last putt in the final match after a dramatic morning of twists and turns.
In the first match between Georgia Hall and Katherine Kirk, the 2016 Oates Victorian Open Champion made 6 birdies in the 17 holes played and emerged victorious 2 & 1.
In the second match between ALPG Team Captain Rachel Hetherington and Scottish star Catriona Matthew, the pair of forty-somethings traded blows back and forwards until Matthew made a key birdie on the par 3 16th hole to take a 1 up lead into the final 2 holes, and ended up a victorious by a 2 & 1 margin
In match 3 Sarah Jane Smith played some superb golf defeating the young Spaniard Nuria Iturrios 3 & 2, while in match 4 Cathryn Bristow birdied the last hole to win her match against Isabelle Boineau 2 up.
With only 4 matches left on the course Su Oh, who had come back from 2 down with 4 holes to play against the talented Dane Nanna Koerstz Madsen to be all square playing 18, punched home a tricky 6 footer to halve the match giving the ALPG Team a chance of at least salvaging a half in the third place final.
In match 6 Sarah Kemp couldn’t find her A game against the in form Englishwomen Florentyna Parker and lost her match 5 & 4
In match 7 Whitney Hillier had been 3 down after 8 holes to experienced Welshwoman Becky Morgan, and stage a spirited fightback to be all square heading to the 18th tee. Both players split the fairway with their tee-shots, and Hillier hitting first hit a superb approach to 3 feet which sealed what had earlier seemed an unlikely victory.
In the final match between Linda Wessberg and Stacey Keating, the Victorian found herself 2 down with 2 holes to play and needed to win the last 2 holes to tie the match and the series with the team from the LET.
On the 17th hole Keating bravely holed from 8 feet to keep the match and ALPG hopes alive, and when she hit a superb approach shot to the 18th green 10 feet from the hole the ALPG team felt that they were in with a chance of salvaging a series tie.
After Wessberg rolled her long birdie putt some 4 feet past the hole Keating had the stage to herself with a putt to tie her match and the series.
Unfortunately, she left the putt agonisingly short of the hole, and Wessberg confidently holed her putt to clinch an LET victory by the margin of 9 points to 7.
ALPG Captain Rachel Hetherington said that she was proud of her team’s performance this week. “The girls fought so hard all week and played their hearts out. Of course they are a little disappointed with the result as it was so close in the end but they have a lot of positives to take onto their next tournament”
LET captain Trish Johnson was also complimentary of the ALPG team’s performance today. “The standard of golf out there today was tremendous, at one stage it looked like we would win comfortably but as we expected they fought right to the end and it all came down to the last putt in the final match”
