LPGA Major Preview - Lee Looking forward to the Challenge
Date: 9th June 2015

Minjee Lee is looking to having fun and being in contention come Sunday afternoon in this week’s LPGA major, the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

There are five Australians are in the field this week in New York, Lee is joined in the field by seven time major champion Karrie Webb, Katherine Kirk, Sarah Jane Smith and Sarah Kemp.

The tournament, being played at the event’s new home, Westchester Country Club in New York, will be played as a par 73 and 6,670-yards in length.  The players are vying for their share of a US$3.5million purse.

The Australian contingent  have been in good form of late, Lee captured her maiden win, Webb posted a top 5 finished last month, while Kemp and Smith have also posted their best results of the year in recent tournaments.

Lee spoke about her goals heading into the second major of 2015, “It’s a major week, so the course will be set up to be challenging for all of us.  I just want to take one shot at a time and really focus on the things I can control.  Come Sunday I want to be in contention and most of all want to have a fun week.”

In relation to what has contributed to her great form of late, “It has been a mixture of things, not just one thing, consistent play and improved putting, but mostly mentally getting my head around that even if one week is not your week, it doesn't mean the next week won't be.  It’s a battlefield out here and you just want to take one event at a time because it’s a marathon not a sprint.”

Even though Lee has secured her card for 2016, her goals in her rookie year haven’t changed,  “Definitely some pressure is off my shoulders, but schedule wise and goals haven't changed. I still want to have a great experience this year and learn as much as possible about tour life and what’s the best way to manage my game throughout the year.” Lee said.

While many eyes will be on Lee, Webb is a season campaigner and loves the challenge of the majors and will also be one to watch.

Kirk is the first Australian out in the morning wave, she tees off the 1st tee at 7.10am local time, followed by Lee at 7.20am.  Smith starts her week on the 10th tee at 7.15, followed by Kemp at 7.25am.  Webb is the only Australian off in the afternoon wave, she gets underway at 1.00pm local time.

South Korean Inbee Park, who has won the last two titles, will be attempting to win the same major three consecutive times since Hall of Famer Annika Sorenstam accomplished that feat from 2003-2005 at the same event.

Last week’s winner Norway’s Suzann Pettersen,  Rolex World No.1 Lydia Ko and American Stacy Lewis will be ones to watch.

Australian fans can watch the first round live, Friday morning at 3am on FoxSports.
