Date: 23rd November 2012

In an attempt to grow the game and make golf more accessible and pertinent to women and girls, Golf Victoria has issued a survey to gain a more in depth understanding of the barriers and enables to participation of females.

Golf Victoria has received funding from The Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (VicHealth) 2011-2014 to encourage participation of women and girls in all aspects of golf.

A total of 1,037 women and 61 girls completed the survey that asked respondents about their thoughts on golf. In addition, over 40 golf coaches’ have provided Golf Victoria with their thoughts, experiences and recommendations about coaching women and girls.

Three reports have been generated and are now available to download from the Give Golf a Go page on Golf Victoria’s website www.golfvic.org.au

‘’Gaining a better understanding of why females play or do not play golf will enable us, Golf Victoria to better promote our sport as well as provide suitable opportunities for participation’’, reports Simon Brookhouse, CEO at Golf Victoria. ‘’We also hope this work will help inform the work golf clubs are currently conducting about increasing female participation and membership.

The Professional Golf Association (PGA) has endorsed the reports which have informed the development of a PGA teaching module. PGA Professionals and Trainees will have access to this educational resource (developed by Peter Knight) to up skill them in the areas of promoting and coaching golf to women and girls.

Brookhouse added, ‘’Golf is a game for life and we want to see everyone, men and women, girls and boys enjoying our wonderful game’’.

As an incentive for women, girls and coaches to complete the survey, Golf Victoria offered lucky prize draws consisting of generic vouchers. Winners of the lucky draw were:
Susan Dawson (Mount Eliza GC), Heather Scales (Commonwealth GC), Margaret Mary Morrison (Mildura Golf Resort), Sonia Adams (Cromer GC, NSW), Arielle Cathcart (Patterson River GC), Emma Bennet, Chris Graham, Peter Van Wegan and Kate Dunn (Golf Instructors).
