The second round of the South African Women’s Open was cancelled because of heavy rains and a waterlogged Southbroom Golf Club course in KwaZulu-Natal.

No play was possible on Saturday, and at 11:30am Ladies European Tour Tournament Director Yvonne Cassidy announced that play would be abandoned for the day.

“As a result of overnight rain and persistent rain we’ve had to abandon Saturday’s play completely. The tournament is going to be reduced to 36 holes with the hope that we can finish play on Sunday,” said Cassidy.
At 5pm local time on Saturday the decision was made to have a cut after 18 holes. It was to the top 60 professional players and ties. The decision was driven by the weather.

After the first round, Norway’s Marianne Skarpnord leads the field on three-under-par 69. She is one shot clear of Finland’s Minea Blomqvist, South Africans Ashleigh Simon and Stacy Lee Bregman, England’s Charley Hull, Sweden’s Camilla Lennarth, American Katie Burnett and Germany’s Nina Holleder.

New Zealand’s Cathryn Bristow is just two off two back heading into the final round, while South Australian Sarah King is further shot back and well positioned to have her best finish on the LET.

ACT’s Nikki Campbell is at even par and tied for 27th position, while Nikki Garrett and Stacey Keating were the only other Australians to make the cut, they are at two-over and tied for 44th.

The cut was made at three-over and 68 players will contest the remaining 18 holes. Unfortunately Western Australian Whitney Hillier missed by one shot. Queensland’s Bree Arthur also missed the cut.
